Not a label, a starting point
Preliminary observation and learning profile
In the intro lesson we begin to get to know how your child understands and uses Turkish. The first observation is not a diagnosis, a certificate or a fixed level. When we consider the next step, we look at your child's age, language experience, interests and participation together.
What do we consider together?
We look at how your child understands Turkish, joins in a conversation and expresses themselves; reading and writing too when they suit their age and experience. We also listen to where they meet Turkish, their experience with other languages and your learning goals. No one expects every skill to be at the same point.
- Understanding: following a short instruction, a question or a story
- Joining in: taking a turn in play and conversation
- Expressing: saying something in their own words
Not observed does not mean cannot do
When a skill does not come up in that lesson, or there is not enough chance to see it, we say so. Silence, shyness or a single answer does not decide anything about your child's language skills.
We make room for how your child takes part
When it suits their age and the activity, pointing, drawing, a short answer or taking part with support are all part of the process. Your child can skip an activity, take a break or stop. Our aim is not to make them compete with other children.
How to read an observation (example, not a real child)
Each line says what was looked at, what happened and in what conditions. There are no percentages, ranks or a single overall level.
- Observed with support: followed the short instruction with a picture and repetition.
- Not observed in this lesson: there was no reading activity, so no conclusion was drawn about reading.
- Not enough information: one short answer was not enough to draw a conclusion about independent speaking.
What happens next?
We share our first observations and a programme suggestion with you. As new observations come up in lessons, needs and next steps can be looked at again. If you feel a shared note does not reflect your child well, contact us to explain the context and ask for it to be reviewed.
Questions on your mind
Is the intro lesson a test?
No. Your child is never told they are being tested. Each activity is a chance to get to know each other, and nothing is marked as a failure.
Will we be given a level or a score?
No. We share what we observed and what we will work on next. One lesson is not enough for a level, and we do not give percentages or rankings.
Can the starting point change?
Yes. The first lessons are a time to look again. If the starting point does not fit, the teacher and our education coordinator adjust it.
