Roots & Talks Characters

Our characters are with us in lessons, digital games and videos. Children get to know them and talk with them in Turkish.

The Roots & Talks characters together
  • Dünya illustration

    Dünya

When she puts on her headphones, the adventure begins. Dünya is a cheerful teacher who takes children on a Turkish journey through songs, games and little stories. Her favourite phrase: “Hadi, birlikte deneyelim!” (Come on, let’s try together!)

  • Ela illustration

    Ela

Every morning, six-year-old Ela video-calls her grandma and tells her a new Turkish word she has learned. When she is happy, her arms fly straight up. She loves playing hide-and-seek (“saklambaç”) with Filiz.

  • Eylül illustration

    Eylül

Ten-year-old Eylül is growing up with two languages: one at school, Turkish in the kitchen with her mum. She writes the Turkish words she likes in her notebook; “gökkuşağı” (rainbow) is at the top of the list. In the evenings she reads fairy tales to Ela.

  • Ahmet illustration

    Ahmet

Ahmet always has a riddle in his pocket. On the morning of a holiday (bayram) he video-calls his grandpa to wish him a happy bayram, then asks him his riddles. He is the one who taught Dino to count.

  • Giray illustration

    Giray

Giray is growing up abroad and learning Turkish with us. His first Turkish word was “merhaba”, and he said it to Pingucan. Sometimes he pauses to find the right word, then smiles and tries again.

  • Defne illustration

    Defne

Fourteen-year-old Defne learns Turkish through songs and writes the lyrics she loves in her notebook. Her favourite word is “yıldız” (star), just like the pattern on her blouse. When Ela gets stuck on a word, Defne sits beside her and they look for it together.

  • Gazi illustration

    Gazi

Sixteen-year-old Gazi rarely goes anywhere without his football. After a match he teaches his friends a Turkish cheer: “Haydi, bir daha!” (Come on, once more!) He tries to solve Ahmet’s riddles, and sometimes asks one of his own.

  • Pingucan illustration

    Pingucan

Pingucan never takes off his crescent-and-star scarf, and he was Giray’s first Turkish friend. He likes cold weather but cannot resist the smell of warm simit. When something goes well, he flaps his wing and shouts “Yaşasın!” (Hooray!)

  • Filiz illustration

    Filiz

Filiz is a sweet and creative elephant. She dances in her pink skirt and paints with her trunk. When she plays hide-and-seek with Ela, she is easy to find: her ears always peek out!

  • Dino illustration

    Dino

Dino looks big but has a very soft heart. He learned to count from Ahmet, and now he counts everything: trees, stars, even clouds. His favourite food is lentil soup (mercimek çorbası).
