Who is this path for?
For children who want to connect with Turkish through family stories, Türkiye and shared culture.
You can consider the programme with the teacher, taking your child’s age, current Turkish and interests into account.
Read the starting approach in detail
Turkish can be a way to ask a grandparent a question, find something to talk about with cousins or understand an expression heard in Türkiye. Children can use the Turkish they already know to explore family stories, different parts of Türkiye, shared history and culture, connecting their own interests with the places their family comes from.
National values and shared history
Explore Atatürk, national holidays and shared history through age-appropriate texts.

Atatürk’s Life and Our National Holidays are topics to explore through age-appropriate short texts, pictures and questions. Children can put events in order, discuss why a holiday is marked and bring their own questions about respect, responsibility and living together.
- Put the events from a short text about Atatürk’s Life in order
- Discuss one of Our National Holidays through family memories
- Give examples of respect and responsibility when discussing Our National Values
Regions, cities and family hometowns
Get to know Türkiye through its seven regions, cities and familiar places.
Explore this section in detail
Culture and geography can be explored through examples from all seven regions of Türkiye. Comparing features of the city where a child lives with the landscape, buildings or everyday customs of their family’s hometown can make a conversation personally meaningful. Questions about Türkiye’s climates also connect seasons with daily life.
- Find Marmara, Aegean, Mediterranean, Central Anatolia, Black Sea, Eastern Anatolia and Southeastern Anatolia on a map and choose a question about each region
- Compare distinctive features of the city they live in and their family’s hometown
- Compare the climates of two places and explain a choice of season and clothing for a visit

Iconic landmarks, regional dishes, artists and famous thinkers offer different ways to learn about Türkiye. Songs, folk songs and poems can also open a conversation about a feeling, place or memory. A photograph, short introduction or listening example can provide a starting point for a topic that interests the child.
- Describe details in a photograph of a landmark or ask about a family story connected with a regional dish
- Read a short introduction to an artist or famous thinker and come up with a question to explore
- Describe the theme of a song, folk song or poem in their own words and share the feeling it brings to mind
Regional voices and expressions
Explore regional words, accents and idioms.
Explore this section in detail
Accents, regional expressions and words from the places a family comes from offer ways to make sense of what a child hears. Idioms and proverbs can be explored by asking who uses an expression, in which situation and what they mean. Different ways of speaking are treated as part of the language’s variety, without ranking one above another.
- Ask what a regional word heard in the family means and compare other ways to say it
- Notice a local way of speaking in an example greeting or short conversation
- Think of a short situation in which someone might use an idiom or proverb

Asking grandparents about their childhood or telling cousins about their day offers a real reason to talk. Examples based on a family visit, a trip to the park or shopping in Türkiye can also give children space to ask about what interests them and listen to someone else.
- Greet older family members, ask how they are and say goodbye
- Join cousins in a game, ask about the rules and take turns speaking
- Make polite requests and say thank you during a holiday visit, at the table or while shopping
