For families in the Netherlands
Online Turkish lessons for children in the Netherlands
The Netherlands has a strong Turkish community of roughly 500–600 thousand people. For children who hear Dutch at school and Turkish at home, Roots & Talks helps make Turkish a natural part of everyday life through live lessons.
When two languages mix
A Turkish word in the middle of a Dutch sentence, a Dutch word in the middle of a Turkish one… This is very natural for children growing up with two languages. Rather than correcting all the time, the teacher reuses the right expression in conversation, and over time the child carries it into their own sentences.
Without weighing down the school week
In the Netherlands, many primary schools have Wednesday afternoons free. A 25-minute online lesson needs no travel, so it fits easily into gaps like this or into the weekend.
Real things to talk about
Cycling to school, a birthday party, a video call with relatives in Türkiye… When topics from a child’s own life come into the lesson, speaking Turkish stops being a task and becomes something they want to tell.
Questions from families abroad
My child reads in Dutch. Can they learn to read Turkish too?
Yes. Both languages use the Latin alphabet, but some letters are different or read differently (such as ş, ç, ğ and ı in Turkish). The teacher shows these differences through short, playful activities.
Can siblings take lessons together?
Yes, siblings can learn together. If their ages or Turkish levels are very different, we can also talk about separate lessons.
Where do lessons take place?
Lessons take place on a computer or tablet, in a live lesson room that opens in your browser. There is no separate program to download.
