For families in Austria
Online Turkish lessons for children in Austria
Austria is home to a Turkish community of roughly 300–400 thousand people; from Vienna to Vorarlberg, many children grow up hearing German at school and Turkish at home. Roots & Talks lessons start from where your child’s Turkish is today and move forward step by step.
If your child understands but does not speak
Many children understand older relatives easily but switch to German when they answer. The teacher starts with words the child already feels sure of, and uses pictures, games and short questions to make answering in Turkish easier.
Sounds German does not have
Turkish words are usually read the way they are written, which gives children confidence. Still, letters such as ı, ğ and ş do not exist in German. The teacher introduces these sounds through songs, rhymes and short reading games.
Turkish that continues after the lesson
A lesson lasts 25 minutes, but Turkish can live on through the rest of the week. After the lesson, the teacher may share small ideas to try together at home: a recipe, a game, a question to ask at dinner.
Questions from families abroad
My child knows very little Turkish. Can they still start?
Yes. Lessons are planned for children starting from zero too; the first lessons begin with listening, recognising and short phrases.
How do we choose a teacher?
You can read the teacher profiles and pick times that suit you. If the choice feels hard, our education coordinator can help.
What happens in the intro lesson?
In the gift 25-minute intro lesson, the teacher meets your child, observes their Turkish in a relaxed setting and shares with you where to begin.
