My Child Does Not Want to Speak Turkish: How Can I Help Without Pressure?

“I don’t want to speak Turkish” can feel personal to a parent. Yet reluctance may come from effort, embarrassment, an earlier correction or simply the wish to use the quickest language. Treat it as information rather than defiance.

First, find the difficult moment

Does resistance appear when relatives ask questions, when a mistake is corrected or when the child is tired? A broad rule such as “Turkish only” can hide the real obstacle. One calm observation is more useful: “You seem comfortable listening, but answering feels hard when everyone waits.”

Lower the speaking demand

Invite participation that does not require a full sentence: choosing a card, finishing one familiar word, giving a character a name or deciding what happens next. The goal is not to trick the child into speaking. It is to give them control over how much language they produce.

Connect Turkish to something they already care about

  • Talk about a game, recipe, football team or craft rather than “practising Turkish”.
  • Let the child choose a song, story or person to share it with.
  • Keep the activity short enough to finish while it still feels good.
  • Notice the attempt without turning it into a performance for others.

What should a teacher do?

A suitable teacher observes before demanding, offers choices and adapts the language load. You can review teacher profiles and available times yourself. If you are uncertain, our education coordinator can help you think through the fit; the final choice remains yours.

A gentle next step

Try one interest-led Turkish moment three times this week. If the resistance softens when the pressure drops, you have found a useful direction. A gift intro lesson can then show how your child responds to a new adult, playful tasks and a 25-minute structure.
